With equipment designed for infants, and a hospital staff who has special training in newborn care, the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is for newborns that need specialized treatment. Babies sent to NICU may include babies born prematurely, babies who suffer as a result of difficulties encountered during delivery or babies who show signs of serious medical problems within the first few days of birth.
The Memorial Foundation funds participation in a multidisciplinary collaboration that includes more than 40 NICUs in the USA and Canada, allowing patients in the Yakima Valley to directly benefit from the shared experiences of other centers.
