"I Can HELP Someone NOW" - Naida Hurlburt, donor

When 92-year-old Naida Hurlburt, who moved from the Lower Valley to Yakima in 1999 following the passing of her husband, heard that she could designate money from her IRA to help Children's Village, she called her broker.

Naida has a family member with Rett syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder on the autism spectrum, and says she wanted to help a local facility dedicated to helping children with disabilities. She says the child in her family, who lives outside the area, has received a great deal of help from her community; Naida knows how important these gifts can be. "There are kids with major challenges and they need our help," Naida says.

Naida became familiar with Children's Village when her daughter, now a counselor in Selah, worked there as a child psychologist.

"I didn't reason it out. I saw that I could give this money without creating a hardship for myself, and I wanted it to go somewhere that it would do some good," she says. Naida wanted the money to be available to Children's Village right away. "I can do this and help somebody now," she says. And while Naida appreciated the tax benefits the IRA donation offered, mostly she was happy to make a difference in the life of a child.
